  Activenture training for young volunteers working with young people with disabilities

What are Activenture Breaks?
London Youth organises seven weeks of “Activenture” outdoor pursuits breaks each year. They cater for young people aged 7-18 years with disabilities and special needs. These weeks are held at Hindleap Warren, which is our residential outdoor pursuits centre in West Sussex.

The purpose of the following ‘Activenture Helper Training’ courses are for any young person aged 13+yrs who wants to get involved helping out on one of the Activenture Breaks weeks at Hindleap Warren.

The course covers:
• Disability Awareness: Issues surrounding disabilities; Communication
• Caring for someone with a disability: Feeding, diets, dressing, hygiene, equipment/aids.
• Moving and Handling Awareness: Assisting with mobility; Use of wheelchairs and hoists
• Your role and responsibilities: Basic Child Protection; Role of a volunteer helper
• Slides of Activenture

  Level One Foundation in Youth Work

This qualification is accredited by national awarding body, ABC and is an excellent value training in youth work skills for young people aged between 16 – 21 yrs in order for them to fulfil an active and useful role as informal youth educators. This course is mapped against the national occupational standards for youth work.

This training course is made up of the following compulsory elements
• 3 residential training weekends
• 2 or 3 evening tutorials
• Course assignments
• Portfolio of evidence
• 4 placement supervision sessions
• Completion of 30 hours work (paid or unpaid) with young people

Topics to be covered include
• Aims of Youth Work
• Self Awareness
• Developing relationships with young people (incl. child protection)
• Young people’s needs
• Working in a team
• Equality of opportunity
• Health and safety

Who the course is for: young people aged between 16 – 21 years who want to become involved in youth work.

There is an interview evening and the course itself comprises of 3 residential training weekends in Buckinghamshire plus 2 or 3 evening tutorial sessions at London Youth in East London.
