Essentials and Tools for Working with Young People

The following courses are all designed to help increase the skills, ability and knowledge base of all practitioners working with young people in a variety of settings.

In addition, our new Essentials courses are designed to support those who have responsibility for running a youth club and cover key areas that you need to know in order to run a successful group. Involving Young People in the Running of a Youth Project - 3 hour course

Aims and Objectives
This short course explores how young people can be involved in the running of a youth project and why this can be important. if you need inspiration or want to develop your practice in this area, then this course is for you.

This course is aimed at adult youth workers.

This course examines:
• How you can empower and encourage young people to find their voice within a youth project.
• How you can then support young people to deliver their ideas within a youth work programme
•what issues and challenges might arise from these new innovations.

Please note that demonstrating the involvement of young people is an essential part for the London Youth Quality Mark (AQYP).

Safeguarding and Child Protection: are you ready? - one day course

Aims and Objectives
This training day offers a comprehensive introduction to safeguarding and the issues that surround child protection. It is for people who are responsible for ensuring that their organisations child protection and safeguarding policies and procedures are appropriate and in line with the most recent legislation.

Topics covered will include:
• What it means in practice to work safely with young people
• Preparing for the changes ahead with the advent of the Independent Safeguarding Authority and the Vetting and Barring Scheme.
• Gaining an insight into the issues of abuse and how to deal with those issues.

This course will cover the criteria for participants aiming to achieve Bronze Level on the London Youth Quality Mark (AQYP).

Staff and Volunteer Management - 3 hour course

Aims and Objectives
As one of the most valuable assets of your organisation, your staff and volunteers should be valued and supported.

This course explores:
• How to manage staff and volunteers effectively, including what your responsibilities are towards them and theirs towards you.
• The broad scope of training opportunities that are available for staff and volunteer development.
•how to ensure that the aims and objectives of your organisation are understood by all

This course will cover the criteria for participants aiming to achieve Bronze Level on the London Youth Quality Mark (AQYP)

An Introduction to Health and Safety (including Risk Assessments) - 3 hour course

Aims and Objectives
An introduction to the basic principles of health and safety legislation and what this means in practical terms for working in a safe environment with young people. This course is for those who have been given the responsibility and authority to implement safe working methods into their youth club or project and to carry out risk assessments.

This course will look at:
• Health and Safety legislation and what it means.
• The concept of risk assessments and their use.
• How to understand and write risk assessments (the focus will be on activities and not necessarily on buildings).

Level 2 Basic Expedition Leadership

The Level 2 Basic Expedition Leadership ("BEL") is a nationally recognized award that trains and qualifies teachers, youth workers and other members of the community to:
• Lead groups in lowland areas
• Have responsibility for the care of others when outdoors including day journeys
• Organise base and standing camps

"BEL" is the minimum qualification required by many local authorities and operating authorities of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme to train and lead groups in the expedition section of the Bronze and Silver Awards. "BEL" also counts towards the service section of all three Awards in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. The award does not qualify people to lead groups in remote or mountainous areas. If candidates are 17 years of age when they start the course, they cannot gain certification until they are 18.

Course Content
"BEL" has ten units, which a candidate must complete. These are:
1. Leadership and party management
2. Instructional and organisational method
3. Planning and preparation
4. Conservation and access
5. Navigation
6. Equipment
7. Living out of doors
8. First Aid and emergencies
9. Fitness and weather
10. Thirty hours voluntary leadership experience

Working with Challenging Behaviour and Anger in a Youth Work Setting - one day course

Do you find yourself in situations where the young people you work with are in conflict with one another? or with you? Would you like to find ways of dealing with challenging behaviour amongst the young people you work with? if the answer is yes, then this course is for you.

Who the course is for:
If you know a young person that often gets into arguments and conflicts with others at your project, or of you need more confidence when faced with an angry young person, then this course can help you understand more fully how to 'defuse' situations of conflict. on this course you will use your own experience of anger and conflict to increase your understanding.

Working with Boys and Young Men from Black and Minority Ethnic Communities - One Day Course

Aims & Objectives
This training day is for youth workers who work with or intend to work with boys and young men from black and minority ethnic communities. the session will explore some of the influential factors in the lives of the young men from this group.

Topics covered during the workshop will include:
• Cultural understanding and background 
• Racism and discrimination
• Issues facing workers when working with young men from ethnic minorities.

Girls and Young Women's Work - one day course

Aims & Objectives
The aim of this course is to enable participants to develop and promote girls and young women’s work within their youth projects.

Participants will have the opportunity to:
• explore some of the issues facing workers when setting up girls and young women’s work and solutions to those issues.
look at the funding and resources available for working with girls and young women
• explore the importance of girls and young women’s work, placing it in a political and historical context
• discover how to develop a curriculum for girls and young women.

Activenture Induction Day - one day course

What is Activenture?
Activenture provides residential adventure weeks for special needs young people aged 8 - 18 years, based at Woodrow High House and Hindleap Warren during the school holidays. This training day is designed to prepare anyone considering volunteering for Activenture in any role. Attendance does not commit anyone to volunteering on the project.

The day will include
• How does Activenture work?
• Disability awareness
• Moving and handling
• Care and hygiene
• Wheelchair handling and safety
• Child protection / safeguarding
• Communication and sign language
• Role of the volunteer

Participant criteria
This training is open to all adults. To volunteer on a week at Activenture, you are asked to complete this training beforehand. A certificate of attendance will be issued to all participants.

Emergency First Aid - 3 hour course

Aims and Objectives
This three hour certificated course is essential for all people who work with young people.

It deals with:
• Emergency and unconscious casualties
• Recovery position
• Resuscitation.
• Bleeding
• Burns

Governance and Management: Are Your Boundaries Set? - 3 hour course

Aims and Objectives
This training course will explore the management structure of your youth project and look at what could be developed or improved in the future. This is also a chance for participants to reflect and share examples of good practice.

By the end of this course participants will:
• have explored how to clarify the roles, leadership and management of their project and so develop and build the framework of the organisation.
• have an understanding of the terms 'Diversity', 'equality' and 'inclusion' and develop strategies for involving staff, volunteers and young people in promoting this work in their organisation.
• be aware of current legislation and the importance of keeping abreast of any changes.

This course will cover the criteria for participants aiming to achieve Bronze Level on the London Youth Quality Mark (AQYP)

Careers Guidance in Youth Work- 3 Hour Course

Aims and Objectives
When we build trusting relationships with young people in our youth projects, we are often ideally placed to help them find their potential in terms of their career paths.

This course looks at:
• Structuring an interactive and engaging careers advice session for young people
• the different careers paths available for young people
• how you can build young peoples confidence and help them nurture a passion
•how you can help motivate young people in terms of careers

How We Teach and Learn About Nature: Environmental Activities for Youth Leaders

Aims and Objectives
A residential weekend of environmental activities and experiences in unspoilt Ashdown Forest. You will leave Hindleap with practical ideas that can be used anywhere, by anyone, to make nature fun for young people. The weekend will include environmental activities, sensory explorations of the forest and an opportunity to relax in peaceful surroundings - finding your own 'special place' in our beautiful woodland.

Participant Criteria
Minimum age 18 years.

All participants must have current CRB clearance.
