Introduction to Youth Work

The aim of this accredited two day course is to provide participants with the basic information, skills and knowledge that everyone working with young people should know.

Aims and objectives
• what is youth work?
• the role of the youth worker
• building relationships with young people
• health and safety
• child protection
• equal opportunities and youth work

Participant criteria
The course is for anyone who is:
• considering doing a youth work qualification
• starting out in youth work

Completion of this course (or evidence of something similar) is one of the criteria that London Youth has for progressing to ABC’s Qualification and Curriculum Authority (QCA) accredited VRQ Level 2 Certificate in Youth Work.  

Dates
Tuesday 10 November and Tuesday 17 March 2010 or,
Saturday 6 and Saturday 13 March 2010 or,                     Wednesday 23 and Wednesday 30 June 2010.

Level One Foundation in Youth Work

We are now recruiting for the 2009-10 Level 1 Foundation in Youth Work training course for 16-21 year olds. Please download a course information pack and a Level 1 Foundation in Youth Work Candidate Application Form. Closing date for completed applications is Thursday 3 December 2009 by 5pm. Interview afternoon: Monday 25 January 2010 (3pm-6pm). Course hours: 3 residential weekends in 2010.

An excellent value qualification, the Level 1 Foundation in Youth Work is accredited by the national awarding body, ABC Awards. The course teaches the basics in youth work skills and is aimed at young youth workers (16–21 years) who are starting to take on positions of responsibility in a youth work setting. This course is mapped against the National Occupational Standards for Youth Work.

This training course is made up of the following compulsory elements: • 3 residential training weekends
• 2 evening tutorials
• course assignments
• portfolio of evidence
• 4 placement supervision sessions
• completion of 30 hours work (paid or unpaid) with young people

• working in a team

Participant criteria
• 16-21 years
• Minimum of six months experience of working or volunteering with young people

There is an interview evening and the course itself comprises of three residential training weekends in Buckinghamshire plus two evening tutorial sessions at London Youth in Hoxton.

Information and interview afternoon Mon 25 Jan 2010 (3.00–6.00pm). Residential training weekends Fri 5 – Sun 7 Mar 2010; Fri 23 Apr – Sun 25 Apr 2010; Fri 21 – Sun 23 May 2010.
Evening tutorials Mon 22 Mar 2010 (6.30–9.30pm); Mon 17 May 2010 (6.30–9.30pm).

VRQ Level Two Certificate in Youth Work

Interview afternoon: Monday 23 November 2009 (3pm-6pm)

This course is recognised by the Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC) and is on the national Qualifications Framework. This Qualification and Curriculum Authority (QCA) accredited Level 2 VRQ (Vocationally Related Qualification) is designed for people working in a youth work setting (public, voluntary or private sector, paid or unpaid) who are either new to youth work and whose work is closely supervised or for people who have experience of youth work and want an access route to a qualification. It is a part-time course comprising of 100 taught hours over 7 months plus 80 hours of face to face work with young people.

The six units within the course represent those elements of the governmental National Occupational Standards for youth work deemed necessary for a qualification at Level 2. They have been designed by the national awarding body in conjunction with the National Youth Agency.

Course Units
• Establish relationships & maintain dialogue with young people.
• Enable young people to be active citizens.
• Enable young people to develop awareness of their self identity and being.
• Work as an effective and reflective practitioner;
• Work in ways that promote equality of opportunity, participation and responsibility.
• Work with young people to safeguard their welfare.

Participant application criteria
• 18yrs+
• completion of London Youth’s two day: ‘Introduction to Youth Work’ training course or evidence of similar; or working/volunteering with young people for at least 1 year or more.

Participants are expected to • Attend all the training sessions • Complete practical assignments to be undertaken in a youth work environment • Build a portfolio of evidence • Complete 80hrs fieldwork practice • Attend a minimum of five placement supervision sessions.

7th Jan 2010 - 28th Oct 2010

Hours
One evening a week (Thursdays 6 – 9pm)

Cost

VRQ Level Three Diploma in Youth Work

This course is recognised by the Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC) and is on the National Qualifications Framework.

This Qualification and Curriculum Authority (QCA) accredited Level 3 Diploma in Youth Work is designed for candidates already involved in youth work / youth support work, who will have already attained the degree of knowledge and skills provided by the Level 2 programme or its equivalent.

Those undertaking the programme may have specialist responsibilities for aspects of a youth work programme, or may manage small teams. The eight units within the course represent those elements of the governmental National Occupational Standards for Youth Work deemed necessary for a qualification at Level 3. They have been designed by the national awarding body, ABC Awards, in conjunction with the National Youth Agency.

Aims and Objectives
The course aims to provide progression to more advanced skills in youth work, and develop participants knowledge and understanding of youth work through a range of topics they can use practically with young people.

Course units
• enable young people to explore and develop their values and self-respect
• enable young people to work effectively in groups
• enable young people to use their learning to enhance their future development
• work with young people to design and develop sessions
• review progress and evaluate opportunities with young people
• manage your work and create effective work relationships
• investigate needs and provisions for young people and promote youth work opportunities
• identify relationships with other organisations and individuals

Participants are expected to: • attend all the training sessions • complete practical assignments to be undertaken in a youth work environment • build a portfolio of evidence • complete 120 hours fieldwork practice

It is appropriate for those working with the 11–25 age groups and it is recommended that participants undertake at least 50%of their fieldwork practice with 13–19 year olds, in line with recommendations in ‘Resourcing Excellent Youth Services’ (DfES, 2001).

Participant Criteria
Aged 18yrs plus In paid employment as a youth support worker or youth worker with specialist responsibility for aspects of a youth work programme. Responsible for supervising the work of small teams of paid and/or voluntary staff. Completed a VRQ Level 2 Certificate in Youth Work or have equivalent skills or knowledge. At least two years experience of working with young people
