ROWING
Row around the world
| During half term week London youth rowing took over George Green’s
Sports Hall for a marathon indoor rowing event. Youngsters from all
London Youth affiliated clubs on the Isle of Dogs were invited to
the event. |
| |
| 4 Youth clubs from the isle of Dogs brought their indoor rowing
machines (on loan from LYR) to the school, to help achieve the goal
of rowing around the four corners of the globe- without leaving the
East End. |
| |
| Young people from Mudchute, Cubitt Town and Alpha Grove busted their
biceps rowing around the world …twice! Some 100,000 “london
youth” mileswere rowed over the day by 16 young people on 10
indoor rowing machines. (we converted metres into miles) |
| |
To help them on their journey the names of the cities and countries
they would pass were posted around the hall and a red wiggly line
was stuck up to show how far they were at any one time. Music from
the country they were in was played to motivate them and give a worldly
ambiance to the occasion.
A great sense of achievement and tiredness was felt by all at the
end of the day. |
| |
“It was interesting to see how far we could go”
“Everyone was cheering and we were supporting each other”
“I enjoyed it because it was a great experience and fun!” |
This is a new initiative in partnership with london Regatta Centre,
sponsored by The Man Group, to introduce young people to the sport of
rowing.
