YOUTH ACTION PROJECTS

Interculture Programme

Interculture is a volunteer and training programme that bring together young people in London from different ethnic backgrounds to organise multi-cultural events in 3 host youth clubs across the capital.
The Interculture Programme aims to unite multi-racial communities and raise the profile of young people’s desire for cultural integration by bringing people together for youth-led events and encouraging the sharing of culture and the celebration of diversity.

4th – 7th April 2006: Interculture Week across London Youth Clubs

Young volunteers who had completed their 200 hours Millennium Volunteering and wanted to take on a new challenge took part in the Interculture programme, organised by London Youth. They attended a residential to explore concepts of race, culture and diversity and to prepare for organising a community event. They then worked hard over the following months to organise Interculture Week and will have their achievements accredited by London Youth through AQA.

250 people attended 3 free events organised by young people, all aiming to reach out to different community groups, celebrate diversity and encourage exchange between cultures through food, arts and language.

The first event was at Hackney Quest in Homerton where local young people put on a fantastic talent show including global fashion, Indian drumming and Jamaican folk songs, followed by a spread of International foods donated by the local community.

At the next event at Dragon Hall in Holborn local people, including the Mayor of Camden Councilor Barbara Hughes, were treated to international decoration and food, Nigerian drumming, Latin-American performers, a young Christian dance group, Bangladeshi singing and the word ‘good night’ in over 20 languages.

The week was topped off at HAAYA (Hounslow Asian and African Youth Association) with young people speaking about what their culture means to them, henna hand painting, an information display on Islam and yet more delicious food from around the world.
