Future Jobs Fund In August 2009 London Youth was awarded £300,000 by the Department for Work and Pensions, through the Future Jobs Fund Scheme, to provide jobs and training in youth work for 50 disadvantaged young people. Building on our existing experience it will take the YouthWorks model to scale. Over a six month job placement, which pays the London Living Wage, the young people taking part receive comprehensive training in core transferable skills and earn a Level One ‘Foundation in Youth Work’ qualification. Each placement is different and individually tailored to best match the needs, skills and aptitudes of those taking part. This will be a rewarding and challenging experience that will provide participants with the confidence and skills necessary to make the most of their lives. The project is taking place across a number of London boroughs focused on those with the greatest need for youth employment including Lewisham, Greenwich, Lambeth, Tower Hamlets and Hackney. Here the young people will help to build the capacity of community youth clubs. Once trained, they will be ideally placed to connect and engage with other young people from their area who are facing employment or educational barriers. A number of the positions are based at London Youth’s Old Street office. Despite being here only a short time, they have already had a huge impact on the organisation. Supporting and strengthening existing programmes they are helping to deliver training, run sports sessions, engage with gang members and recruit more young people into the scheme. Their hard work was recently recognised by a visit from the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Yvette Cooper, to London Youth’s offices. Here she took part in an employability session aimed at helping those who have been given work to find jobs once the placement is complete.
