Yvette Cooper, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Visits London Youth to See Future Jobs Fund in Action

Yvette Cooper, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, recently visited London Youth's office to meet some of the young people who have been employed by London Youth through the Future Jobs Fund scheme.

After being shown around the office and introduced to the young people and their teams she took part in an employability session. The group discussed the skills and qualities required for different jobs and the various routes into employment.

London Youth is providing 50 jobs through the Future Jobs Fund Scheme. Over a 6 month job placement, which pays the London Living Wage, the young people receive comprehensive training in core transferable skills and earn a Level One ‘Foundation in Youth Work’ qualification. These placements are tailored to each individual young person in order to match their individual needs, skill sets and aptitude.

Nick Wilkie, Chief Executive of London Youth said:

“We were thrilled to introduce Yvette Cooper to people who have started work here and who are already helping us to serve young Londoners.

“The new starters have truly been an inspiration to everyone else in the organisation.

“Their energy and dedication to youth work has had a huge impact on London Youth, the clubs we work with and those who use them.

“Having young people help us to deliver programmes in their own local communities has been invaluable.”

Work and Pensions Secretary Yvette Cooper said:

"I am pleased that London Youth has joined us in Backing Young Britain and has given 50 young people the chance of a job.

“The Government is guaranteeing every young person a job, training or work experience after six months unemployment.

“In the 80s youth unemployment kept rising for four years after the recession ended. We are investing in help now to make sure that will never happen again and a generation of talent isn't wasted."
