NCVO PUBLIC POLICY OUTLINE AND FUNDING
|
Influencing your local council
There is currently considerable pressure on every local authority to deliver the Government’s Every Child Matters agenda. The voluntary and community sectors are key partners in this process; this includes youth clubs and projects in communities across the country. The Government and Opposition parties have discovered that voluntary and community projects are innovative and can respond to needs in a way that statutory agencies can find difficult to do. This means that there are now more opportunities for youth clubs and projects to become involved in delivering services commissioned by local councils. This new climate also means that local councillors and MPs are more willing to listen to local groups as they are usually the ones who are extremely effective at communicating issues from local communities and ‘passing learning up the chain’. On this page are links to a number of key websites that will help you to find out details about your local council and also to find out how your club or project can bid to deliver services. As a first step we would suggest accessing the website of Direct Gov in order to find the identity of your local councillors and committees. You will be directed to website of your local council and will then be able to find out when is the best time to meet your local councillors and when key meetings are scheduled to take place. The London Voluntary Services Council provides resources and support for those who would like to have more information on the commissioning of local services. On the left hand column are current open Government consultations. Feedback on this aspect of London Youth's website would be welcome to Alison Inglis-Jones. She is contactable on the London Youth main switchboard number on the London Youth website.
