Hindleap Warren

Environmental Studies at Hindleap Warren is affectionately known by the staff as EVS. Hindleap's EVS sessions are about experience rather than theory. The children find out about the Earth’s natural systems by taking part in specially designed activities out in our 300 acre forest. They leave Hindleap having acquired a deeper understanding and appreciation for the natural world.

EVS sessions can be included in any programmes. We also run a specific environmental course called Earthkeepers. It is also possible for visiting groups to design their own EVS programme to suit their needs.

The sessions listed below are a taster of the Environmental Studies we do at Hindleap. For a full list of sessions and details of how our EVS complements the National Curriculum please contact Rosie Cole on 01342 822625 or via email rosie@hindleap.com

Munchline monitors...

The children look for physical evidence of food chains around Hindleap Warren to see how the sun’s energy moves through each step of a “Munchline”. They then sort this evidence and discover that there are less living things at each stage of the food chain because energy is being used up. The activity is rounded off by the children explaining how their own personal actions can help look after some of the Earth’s food chains.

Witch's tree...

Groups learn about this beautiful old spreading beech tree deep in our grounds, exploring it using their different senses as artists and carrying out experiments on the tree as scientists. They might then compose a poem about the tree or draw a picture of it.

Hindleap animals...

We begin in the classroom where the group discusses which animals might be found in the Hindleap Warren grounds, and what evidence they may leave behind.  They then go out and explore the forest looking for evidence of the animals. The group may do some field sketches or bring their finds back to the classroom to study in further detail using our reference library.

Pond dipping...

A popular activity in the summer, the children explore the fascinating life of our pond. The group carefully collect pond life and, using simple keys, try to identify their finds. Care is always taken to return the creatures safely back to their homes.
