Hindleap Warren

Earthkeepers is a three-day course, designed by the Institute of Earth Education for children of primary school age. At Hindleap it can be combined with outdoor activities to make a full Monday - Friday week. Click here for a sample programme. Earthkeepers introduces children to ecological concepts and helps to encourage a closer personal relationship with the earth and its life.

The programme deals with the four basic ecological concepts – the flow of energy (Munchline Monitors), the cycling of materials (Speck Trails), the inter-relating of life (Connection Inspection) and the changing of forms (Time Capsules). Before arriving at Hindleap Warren, the children are sent a map of our grounds and a letter from a mysterious character called “EM”, who is to be their inspiration for their visit. Whilst here they complete the four concepts and a variety of other activities based on a sensory appreciation for nature.

There are also some evening activities, where the children in small groups use their keys to unlock the boxes to discover a message about them and their place in the environment. There is also a Game-Show which is a fun and exciting way for the children to test their knowledge on what they have learnt over the week.

With the completion of each activity the children “earn” a key which unlocks a box containing special information about the world. There is, thus, a sense of excitement and achievement about the learning process. On returning home the children must then put some of their newfound knowledge to practical use in order to “earn” the final keys. This is a course that depends, to some extent, on work back at school, both prior to and after the trip, but if this is not managed the course is a powerful experience and learning tool in its own right.
