News update Headlines: (click to reveal) New Activenture Weekends for Spring 2010 Volunteers 2010 Dates Have Been Released! v involved Gets Involved With Activenture (update) Activenture - Police Officer Training (another update!) If you are thinking about becoming a volunteer for the first time...
New Activenture Weekends for Spring 2010 - Free Guest Places! We are delighted to announce that we have an agreement with East Sussex County Council to provide two Activenture weekends for Guests from the East Sussex Area only. Guests for these weekends in March and June will be able to attend free providing that: a) they reside in East Sussex (excluding Brighton & Hove), b) are receiving at least middle rate Disability Living Allowance, c) have not attend Activenture previously. This is a new venture for Activenture and is an exciting change to our annual programme. Volunteers are welcome to apply now - the Staff and Helper application forms now include both weekends and can be downloaded from the useful Downloads Page click here Volunteer 2010 Dates Have been Released! All 2010 volunteer application forms for 2010 are now available for download - see below. If you haven't yet sent in your Residential Helper or Staff Application Form then you will need to be pretty nifty about it as weeks will fill up quickly. A few suggestions: 1) Send in your residential application form now (you can train after gaining a place, but before you actually go residential) 2) Indicate on your form any weeks that you are available and indicate your weeks in preferred order. In the event that your first choice is full we can then offer your second, and so on. 3) If we cannot offer you a place on your chosen weeks we may offer you a reserve place - we often work our way through our reserve list as volunteer circumstances often change when they are applying so far ahead (e.g. get a job). 4) If you are willing to be a reserve in the event that we cannot offer you a place, then please state this on your form so that you get added onto the list as soon as possible to be higher on it (this means you have best chance to be contacted soonest if a place arises). 5) Trained reserves will get a higher priority on the reserve list! 6) To get an application form click here Although we generally advertise our minimum age for volunteering as a Residential Helper being 14+yrs, we have recently successfully integrated Helpers into Activenture from the age of 13. This does however depend on the individual - some are ready for this type of work other are not, (as is also the case for older volunteers). We shall amend our literature in due course to reflect this and welcome enquiries from 13 year old potential volunteers. If there are any concerns or questions please contact Les (01342 828218, les@hindleap.com) What about doing our Smartie Challenge – buy yourself a tube of Smarties (even better several, or a box maybe!) – enjoy eating them and don’t forget to offer them around. Don’t throw the empty tube/box away – why not recycle it by filling it up again only this time with any loose change (notes/cheques!) that you or your friends have to say “thank you” to Activenture for being so brilliant for suggesting that we gorge ourselves on Smarties! click here for more details. return to headlines Duck Race Results! Sunday 22nd November 09 (postponed from 20th September 09) At the second attempt, we finally have a result - but it wasn't without it's problems! We turned up at Southease Bridge around 11am to be exposed to a howling gale and sure enough, driving rain joined in shortly afterwards. Tim and Ben (Hindleap instructors) unloaded the canoe and changed into their wet weather kit and we waited a while. We stood on the bridge to decide how we were going to attempt this and nearly got blown over. We decided therefore that in the interests of safety for the canoeists and the fact that had we released the ducks it was highly likely that many of them probably would have been blown onto the river bank and not even touch the water (those that did probably would have got to Lewes much quicker than we could have), we could not therefore proceed. We decided to organise an impromptu "ducky dip" in the shelter of the minibus - all ducks were emptied into a canoe, Tim had his hat pulled down over his face (almost voluntarily) and nursey Pauline Baitup observed and these are the results: 1st - Stephanie Hill (Worthing), wins £100 2nd - Lydia Aggrey (London), wins £50 3rd - Tessa McKirdy (Brighton), wins £25 Booby Prize - Adrian Penn, wins a very nice family of plastic ducks! May we of course congratulate the winners, but more importantly thank everyone who has participate by buying/selling ducks. 800 ducks were in fact sold, which means that we raised £625 for Activenture after paying out the prizes. NB: We would like to add that no ducks were harmed during the raising of this sum - but several humans became cold and wet right through to their underwear! return to headlines

Even more schools and colleges booked induction training days which is absolutely fantastic. We are sorry if we were unable to find sufficient dates last year for some of you - you've got to book us early! return to headlines v involved Gets Involved With Activenture (update) Many of you may already be aware of v (yes, it really is called "v"). This replaces the now defunct Millennium Volunteer Ward Scheme. v is a nationally recognised volunteer reward scheme where any amount of voluntary hours are certified and can be added to your CV, etc. For those of you living in East or West Sussex, we have arranged for the respective v co-ordinators to visit Hindleap during the Activenture weeks to sign up those aged 16-25yrs. We have now set up the same arrangement with the Bucks co-ordinators for Woodrow weeks as well. If you live outside these areas you can register with v by going to vinspired.com and doing it online. Doesn't cost you a penny and if you are already volunteering with us then why not get it recognised! return to headlines Activenture - Police Officer Training (another update!) Police Officer Training has recently gone through a big change - no longer do new officers go to police training colleges, as each police force now is responsible for it's own training in conjunction with local universities. As part of the course, each officer has to undertake two periods of placement working within their own community areas alongside members of public. During 2006, Activenture became registered as a placement for Thames Valley Police at Woodrow - student officers have already participated and will again do so this year. Last year Activenture (Hindleap) was registered as a placement for Sussex Police. We have received a number of student officers from both police forces. Feed back from the student officers has been incredible. Sadly each police force is restricted to working within it's own community so it is unlikely that we will benefit from other police forces joining us (Ahem.. except for the British Transport Police who will be sending their first student officers to us during the spring of 2010!). As the student officers are not residential this means that they provide us with valuable extra pairs of hands and don't affect our residential volunteer quotas. return to headlines If you are thinking about becoming a volunteer for the first time...
