Rottingdean Village Quiz & Cream Tea, Sunday 27th June 10

Now this one sounds nice because you can start off with a bit of gentle physical exercise (maybe a stroll on the Undercliff Walk, over Beacon Hill or visit the Kipling Gardens?), then enjoy a cream tea at the Scout Headquarters (top of Whiteway Lane, Rottingdean, East Sussex), and exercise your brain cells by joining in a quiz while you recover! This has been organised by one of our volunteers (Dave Hunt) and all profits will be kindly donated to Activenture. Quiz sheets will be available at the Scout Headquarters from 2:30pm, and teas from 3:30pm. Adults £3:50, Child £2, Family of 4 £10. If you wish to participate please contact Dave on 01273 303236 before 20th June.

Date for your Diary - Family Fun Day @ Hindleap Warren

Please make a note that we have booked 5th September 2010 for another legendary Family Fun Day at Hindleap Warren. No further details available yet - other than there could be activities including Zip Wire, Archery, Climbing Wall, etc, so break the news gently to your granny and auntie Flo because this could get wild! Watch this space..

Smartie Challenge!

What about doing our Smartie Challenge – buy yourself a tube of Smarties (even better several, or a box maybe!) – enjoy eating them and don’t forget to offer them around. Don’t throw the empty tube/box away – why not recycle it by filling it up again only this time with any loose change (notes/cheques!) that you or your friends have to say “thank you” to Activenture for being so brilliant for suggesting that we gorge ourselves on Smarties! click here for more details.

Duck Race Results! Sunday 22nd November 09

At the second attempt, we finally have a result - but it wasn't without it's problems! We turned up at Southease Bridge around 11am to be exposed to a howling gale and sure enough, driving rain joined in shortly afterwards. Tim and Ben (Hindleap instructors) unloaded the canoe and changed into their wet weather kit and we waited a while. We stood on the bridge to decide how we were going to attempt this and nearly got blown over. We decided therefore that in the interests of safety for the canoeists and the fact that had we released the ducks it was highly likely that many of them probably would have been blown onto the river bank and not even touch the water (those that did probably would have got to Lewes much quicker than we could have), we could not therefore proceed. We decided to organise an impromptu "ducky dip" in the shelter of the minibus - all ducks were emptied into a canoe, Tim had his hat pulled down over his face (almost voluntarily) and nursey Pauline Baitup observed and took photos (which we haven't got yet to show you) and these are the results:

1st - Stephanie Hill (Worthing), wins £100

2nd - Lydia Aggrey (London), wins £50

3rd - Tessa McKirdy (Brighton), wins £25

Booby Prize - Adrian Penn, wins a very nice family of plastic ducks!

May we of course congratulate the winners, but more importantly thank everyone who has participate by buying/selling ducks. 800 ducks were in fact sold, which means that we raised £625 for Activenture after paying out the prizes.

NB: We would like to add that no ducks were harmed during the raising of this sum - but several humans became cold and wet right through to their underwear!

We have registered "London Youth Activenture" on EasyFundraising.org.uk where by simply    nominating us as your charity, and clicking on the links to over 600 retailers, we will receive up to 15% of the value of your purchases at no cost to you! Even if you simply use their search engine to find retailers, we also receive a small donation.

Ever Thought About Fundraising For Activenture?

Activenture is extremely popular and there is an ever-increasing demand for places, however providing these opportunities and running such a project is extremely expensive, calling for expert multi-staffing, good quality activities and special medical equipment.

It goes without saying that Activenture costs a lot of money each year, facilitating nearly 1000 volunteers and 400 guests. Although each guest pays to attend a residential week, we have to rely on the good will of many organisations and individuals whom very kindly make donations. The donations enable us to cover all the costs of running Activenture and as such are an essential requirement.

With Activenture weeks operating during most school holidays, and the amount of volunteer training required in between, its no wonder that our specialised equipment is well used and therefore has to be constantly serviced or replaced, plus the simplest of things such as disposable gloves, or craft materials all costs money, which soon  mounts up.

We are very fortunate to receive many unexpected cheques in the post from individuals kind enough to think of us - perhaps because we have been of service, or perhaps because they have witnessed the work that we do. Some schools and colleges have also very kindly nominated us as their charity and donated proceedings as result of non-uniform days and other events.

Many of our volunteers and other supporters have become Friends of Activenture by donating £10 annually, to receive regular newsletters and information about events during the year.

We have a fund raising committee which consists of a body of volunteers that meet once a quarter to plan events such as: Sponsored Duck Race, Sponsored Dog Walks, Sponsored Swims, Fayres, Sponsored Canoe Trips, Non-Events (people pay not to come!), Fashion Shows.

Some charities such as Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs, Women's Institute, offer to pay for the cost of days out (e.g. a day in Brighton followed by a disco and BBQ). Some prefer to donate new equipment such as wheelchairs, and shower equipment, others sponsor a guest from their area. Recently the Inner Wheel Club of Worthing took on a massive task of restoring our Activenture Tapestry (approximately 4m x 10m) which took a team of ladies over six months to complete.

As part of London Youth we are also supported by a fundraising team in London. Through them we have received considerable support from charities such as City Bridge Trust, Jack Petchey Foundation, CHK Charities and the Four Acre Trust to name a few.

If you or your organisation would like to consider fund raising for Activenture, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Di Churchill on 01342 828215 or email di@hindleap.com
